In 1904, tea bags were accidentally invented. Their inventor, Thomas Sullivan (tea merchant), decided that it would be cheaper to send small tea samples to potential buyers in silk bags rather than boxes. Recipients mistakenly considered that these bags should be brewed. Soon Sullivan was literally flooded with orders for his "tea bags".
